Boiler Upgrade Scheme - A Snapshot
The momentum behind the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) continues to build, with January and February 2024 seeing a notable rise in the adoption of green heating technologies. January’s data revealed a 39% year-on-year increase in applications, crossing the 2,000 mark for the first time outside the initial surge observed in October and November 2023 following the grant increase. This enthusiasm was echoed in February, with applications soaring by 75% compared to February 2023.
The scheme’s grants, which offer £7,500 for air and ground source heat pumps and £5,000 for biomass boilers, have led to 33,424 applications by the end of January 2024, with the majority favouring air source heat pump installations. The median costs post-grant for air source and ground source heat pumps are £13,200 and £24,549 respectively, showcasing the financial viability of these sustainable options.
Ian Rippin, CEO at MCS, highlighted the scheme’s robust performance, noting a 20% increase in heat pump deployments in January 2024 compared to the 2023 monthly average, underscoring the significant impact of the grant uplift to £7,500.
